Generations and drivetrains
Harriers in Kenya span several generations of Japanese imports, with petrol, turbo-petrol and hybrid versions. Gearboxes include conventional automatics and, on many later models, a CVT; hybrids use their own transaxle. Some are four-wheel drive. Because specifications vary so much, we confirm your exact model before servicing.
Common service requirements
- Engine oil and filter at the correct interval and grade
- Air and cabin filters — the cabin filter matters for AC performance
- Spark plugs at the scheduled mileage
- Automatic, CVT or hybrid transaxle fluid with the correct specification
- On hybrids: cleaning the hybrid battery cooling air intake and checking its fan
- Brake fluid, coolant and, on AWD versions, rear-differential and transfer fluids
- Brake and suspension inspection at every service
Issues owners commonly report
- Brake vibration or noise, often from disc wear on a heavy vehicle
- Suspension knocks from links, bushes or worn shock absorbers
- AC performance dropping, from a dirty cabin filter or refrigerant leaks
- Hybrid system warnings on hybrids, sometimes linked to battery cooling
- Gearbox hesitation, sometimes linked to fluid condition
These depend on age, mileage and history.
Diagnostics
We read fault codes from the engine, gearbox, ABS and — on hybrids — hybrid system modules, review live data, and test the relevant components. Brake and suspension complaints are checked with the vehicle raised and wheels removed where needed.
Keeping your Harrier healthy
- Service on schedule with the correct fluids for your drivetrain.
- Have brakes checked regularly — especially if you drive in heavy traffic.
- On hybrids, keep the hybrid battery air intake clear and have it cleaned at services.
- Replace the cabin filter regularly for better AC and air quality.
