Car Key Programming: an overview
A new key will not start a modern car until it has been programmed to the vehicle. Programming links the key's transponder chip to the immobiliser and pairs remote or smart functions, so the car accepts the key and responds to its buttons.
Key programming is needed when you buy a replacement or spare key, when a key stops being recognised, and when lost keys need to be removed from the vehicle's memory.
Problems we can help with
- New or replacement key will not start the car
- Remote locks and unlocks intermittently or not at all
- "Key not detected" message on the dashboard
- Immobiliser light flashing
- Lost keys need to be disabled
What we do
We identify your vehicle's key and immobiliser system, confirm what is required and give you an estimate. Using the appropriate equipment and procedure for your vehicle, we program the transponder and pair the remote or smart functions. Every programmed key is then tested for starting, locking and unlocking.

Car Key Programming: frequently asked questions
Can I program a car key myself?
A few older vehicles allow limited self-programming of remotes, but most modern immobiliser systems require specialist equipment and procedures.
Can you program a key I bought online?
Sometimes. The key must be the correct type and frequency for your vehicle and in a programmable state. Send us a photo and your vehicle details and we will advise before you visit.
What is the difference between key programming and key coding?
The terms are often used interchangeably. On our key coding page we explain immobiliser and control-unit coding, which some vehicles need after certain repairs.
