Steering Repair: an overview
The steering system is what keeps your vehicle pointing where you want it to go, so any change in how it feels deserves attention. Steering that has become heavy, vague, noisy or pulls to one side usually has a specific cause — a worn joint, a leak, a failing pump or a problem with the alignment.
We find that cause, explain it in plain language and give you an itemised estimate before any repair.
Problems we can help with
- Steering feels heavy, especially at low speed
- Free play or a "loose" feeling in the steering wheel
- Whining or groaning when turning
- Knocking or clunking over bumps when steering
- Vehicle pulls to one side
- Steering wheel not straight when driving straight
- Power steering fluid leak or warning light
What we do
We start with a road test and an inspection with the vehicle raised: tie-rod ends, rack ends and boots, the steering rack, column joints, and — depending on the vehicle — the hydraulic power steering pump, hoses and fluid, or the electric power steering system and its fault codes.
Steering and suspension work together, so we also check the suspension joints and tyres for uneven wear, which often shows where the problem lies. Once the cause is confirmed, you receive an estimate. After an approved repair that affects the geometry, we recommend a wheel alignment so the vehicle drives straight and the tyres wear evenly.

Steering Repair: frequently asked questions
Why has my steering suddenly become heavy?
Common causes include low power steering fluid from a leak, a failing power steering pump or belt, a fault in an electric power steering system, or low tyre pressures. It should be checked promptly because heavy steering makes the vehicle harder to control.
Is a whining noise when I turn serious?
On hydraulic systems it often points to low fluid or a pump that is wearing out. Driving on with low fluid can damage the pump, so it is worth having it inspected soon.
Do I need a wheel alignment after steering repairs?
Often, yes. Replacing tie-rod ends or a steering rack changes the steering geometry, so an alignment afterwards keeps the vehicle driving straight and prevents uneven tyre wear.
