How Much Does Car Servicing Cost in Kenya? What Affects the Price

Why car service prices vary — service type, engine size, oil and filters, parts quality and extra work found — and how to get a clear, itemised estimate.

“How much is a service?” is one of the first questions drivers ask — and the honest answer is that it depends on your vehicle and what it needs. Rather than quote a figure that may not apply to your car, here is what actually drives the price, so you can compare quotes fairly.

1. What kind of service it is

  • An oil change covers engine oil and the oil filter.
  • A minor service usually adds a set of safety checks.
  • A major service includes items due at longer intervals, such as air and fuel filters, spark plugs and other fluids.

Two quotes for “a service” can include very different work, so always ask what is included.

2. Your engine and vehicle

Larger engines usually take more oil. Some engines need specific oil specifications, which cost more. Diesel engines have fuel filters that petrol engines don’t, and SUVs and 4x4s may have extra fluids — transfer case and differentials — that are due at certain intervals.

3. Oil and filter quality

The correct oil grade and specification for your engine matters more than the brand name. Good-quality filters that fit properly protect the engine. Very cheap oil or filters can cost more in the long run.

4. Parts quality

When parts are needed, there is often a choice between genuine, OEM, aftermarket and sometimes used parts, each at a different price. Our guide to genuine, OEM, aftermarket and used parts explains the differences.

5. What the inspection finds

A service often reveals other items that need attention — worn brake pads, a leaking hose, a tired battery. These aren’t part of the service price, and they should never be added without your agreement. A good garage explains what it found, why it matters and how urgent it is, and lets you decide.

6. How the vehicle has been maintained

A car that has been serviced regularly is usually cheaper to service, because fewer items are overdue at once. Stretching intervals often means paying for more at the next visit.

How to get a clear price

  • Ask for an itemised estimate listing parts and labour separately.
  • Ask what is included — and what isn’t.
  • Make sure extra work needs your approval before it’s done.
  • Keep your service records, so you know what’s actually due.

At Lionized Autocare, we inspect the vehicle, send an itemised estimate to your phone and only start work once you approve it. Book a service and we’ll tell you exactly what your car needs.
