Engines and gearboxes
Most Fielders in Kenya are Japanese imports of the Corolla Fielder, commonly with a 1.5-litre or 1.8-litre petrol engine and, on many later models, a CVT automatic gearbox. Some are four-wheel drive. Oil grades, CVT fluid and parts differ between versions, so we confirm your exact model before servicing.
Common service requirements
- Engine oil and filter at the correct interval and grade
- Air filter (more often on dusty roads) and cabin filter
- Spark plugs at the scheduled mileage
- CVT or automatic gearbox fluid, using the correct Toyota specification
- Coolant, brake fluid and drive-belt checks
- Tyre rotation and alignment checks
Issues owners commonly report
- Suspension knocks from anti-roll bar links, lower-arm bushes or shock absorbers
- Rough or unstable idle, often from a dirty throttle body, spark plugs or ignition coils
- Brake pad and disc wear, especially on vehicles used for town driving or ride-hailing
- CVT hesitation or judder, sometimes linked to fluid condition
- Cooling system leaks on older, high-mileage cars
As with any model, age, mileage and service history make a big difference.
Diagnostics
For warning lights, poor running or gearbox concerns, we read the fault codes and live data, check fluid levels and condition, and test the likely components rather than replacing parts on guesswork.
Keeping your Fielder healthy
- Service on schedule with the correct oil and CVT fluid.
- Check the suspension if you hear knocks over bumps — it often starts with inexpensive parts.
- Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and coolant level on older cars.
- If you use the Fielder for work, ask about a regular health check to plan maintenance.
