What To Do After a Car Accident

A calm, practical checklist for the moments, days and weeks after a car accident in Kenya — safety, records, insurance and getting the repair right.

An accident — even a minor one — is stressful. Having a clear checklist helps you protect yourself, your passengers and any future claim. This article is general guidance, not legal advice; always follow the law and your insurer’s instructions.

At the scene

  1. Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call for emergency help first.
  2. Make the scene safe. Switch on hazard lights and, if it’s safe and legal to do so, move vehicles out of the path of traffic. Use warning triangles if you have them.
  3. Report the accident as required by law. Accidents involving injury or significant damage must be reported to the police. Keep the reference details you are given.
  4. Exchange details. Names, phone numbers, registration numbers and insurance details of everyone involved.
  5. Take photos. The vehicles from all sides, the damage up close, number plates, the road layout, skid marks and road signs. Photos taken on the day are hard to dispute later.
  6. Note witnesses. Names and phone numbers of anyone who saw what happened.
  7. Avoid admitting fault at the scene; stick to the facts.

Within the next day or two

  • Notify your insurer and follow their claims process. They’ll tell you what documents and estimates they need.
  • Don’t assume minor damage is only cosmetic. A pushed-in bumper can hide broken mounts, a damaged radiator, bent suspension or misaligned sensors.
  • Watch for warning signs: new noises, the car pulling to one side, steering that feels different, warning lights (especially the airbag light), or fluid leaks. If you notice any of these, don’t keep driving the car — have it inspected.

Getting the car assessed

A proper assessment looks at the whole impact zone: body panels, bumpers and lights, cooling components, suspension and steering, and the electrical items in the area. The result should be a clear, itemised estimate — which you can share with your insurer — and photographs of the damage.

At Lionized Autocare we photograph the damage, explain what needs repairing or replacing, and give you a written estimate. Work starts only when you (and your insurer, where applicable) approve.

During the repair

Repairs after an accident usually combine:

  • Panel beating to straighten or replace damaged panels
  • Car painting to refinish and colour-match repaired areas
  • Bumper repair or replacement, including sensors
  • Mechanical repairs to anything affected by the impact

With our private status link, you can follow progress and see photos without chasing for updates.

After you collect the car

Check the repair in good daylight, test lights and sensors, and keep all paperwork with your vehicle’s records.
